Magpie birds look like crows with some white feathered spots. They are pretty common on the streets around here. Walking near them is generally fine however, they have a tendency to get protective of their nest. When they do feel threatened they attack. They’ll swoop down and peck you on the head.

Our Professor, Megan Brown, had this unfortunate encounter with one. She was riding her bike and one came down and pecked her helmet and nipped her ear. She learned after how to avoid this. Many bikers attach zip ties to their helmet so that they stick up like spikes. As if helmets weren’t doofy looking enough, this really adds a laugh.
